MUJI has recently launched a new immersive lodging experience in Chiba Prefecture—MUJI BASE OIKAWA. This unique guesthouse is a renovated former elementary school, offering travelers a chance to experience the essence of local life through their stay.
A Celebration of Woodwork and Minimalist Design
One of the highlights of MUJI BASE OIKAWA is its wooden architecture. MUJI has carefully preserved and innovatively repurposed the original wooden structures of the school, showcasing its signature refined yet simple woodcraft techniques. The result is a warm and inviting space that seamlessly blends traditional Japanese elements with modern design, creating a truly unique atmosphere for visitors.
In recent years, MUJI has been actively promoting the "MUJI BASE" initiative, as part of its broader "Ryohin Keikaku" (Good Product Plan). This initiative is driven by the goal of "creating a better life and society", fostering local revitalization through shared values and experiences with the community. By transforming abandoned buildings and repurposing wood materials, MUJI BASE aims to create vibrant community spaces, allowing travelers to immerse themselves in authentic local lifestyles and discover the hidden charm of each region.
A Scenic Getaway in Chiba's Yoro Valley
MUJI BASE OIKAWA is the third guesthouse in the MUJI BASE series, situated in Yoro Valley, a renowned natural retreat in Chiba Prefecture. With picturesque landscapes throughout the seasons, stunning mountainous terrain, and breathtaking autumn foliage, the area is perfect for hiking and sightseeing.
The guesthouse itself is a thoughtfully repurposed space, originally Oikawa Elementary School, which was closed due to declining student enrollment. During the renovation process, MUJI preserved the simple and nostalgic charm of the school while incorporating creative design elements — such as repurposing old art classroom tables into dining tables, transforming musical instruments into lighting fixtures, and even converting rackets into decorative mirrors. These thoughtful touches add playfulness and surprise to the space, making each corner a discovery.
More Than Just a Stay – A Community Hub
Beyond its accommodations, MUJI BASE OIKAWA features a MUJI store, shared workspace, coin laundry, and library, all designed to be used by both travelers and local residents. This creates an interactive space where visitors can truly engage with the community, rather than just passing through.
By integrating woodcraft aesthetics, revitalizing old buildings, and transforming underutilized spaces, the MUJI BASE concept breathes new life into heritage architecture, bridging past and present. It offers a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of the city, allowing guests to reconnect with nature and rediscover the beauty of local culture.
