Species Introduction
American Soft Maple is very similar in appearance to American Hard Maple. Soft Maple typically has a straight grain, although it is more prone to regional color variations. The sapwood is grayish-white, while the heartwood ranges from light reddish-brown to deep reddish-brown.
Production Areas and Distribution
Soft Maple grows widely in the eastern United States. Eastern Soft Maple is commonly referred to as Red Maple in the northern states and Silver Maple in the midwestern and southern states. Red Maple wood is very similar to Hard Maple, usually having a consistent color. Silver Maple wood has a wider color range and tends to be softer in texture.
Applications
American Soft Maple is 25% softer than Hard Maple, making it easier to work with. It machines well, and nails, screws, and glues satisfactorily. It can be stained and polished to produce excellent surface finishes, making it an ideal wood for decorative purposes. American Soft Maple is used for various interior applications, including furniture, veneers, doors, fine woodworking, cabinetry, and mouldings. It is also a good woodworking and carving wood, suitable for making musical instruments.
