Species Introduction
IPE is a wood of extremes: extremely dense and durable, as well as extremely difficult to work. Its incredible hardness and strength make it well suited for flooring applications, though it is referred to as “Brazilian Walnut” among flooring dealers—though it is not related to true Walnut in the Juglans genus.
Production Areas and Distribution
IPE is distributed in Central and South America. The heartwood colors vary, ranging from reddish-brown to yellowish-olive brown or deep blackish-brown. Sometimes IPE features contrasting dark brown/black stripes. In some species, IPE contains powdery yellow deposits.
Applications
Has a fine to medium texture, with the grain varying from straight to irregular or interlocked. Moderate natural luster. Ipe is highly valued for its durability and excellent resistance to insects. It is commonly used for flooring, decorative panels, exterior wood, and decking.
